Winter Updates from Sus Rep Louise Carroll

Another fantastic Sustainuary has come to an end!

The Events Subcommittee organized four great programs.

The first was the Trashion Show! SusReps from each house worked with the House to organize models for the show. Houses competed in the name of fashion and recycling to create the most sustainable runway outfit. Congratulations to McClellan for making such a beautiful outfit from old homework assignments!

Next was Eyes of the Wild, where students met some exotic animals and learned about the importance of respecting wildlife and nature! The event was fully packed for all sessions, and students particularly loved the wallaby and porcupine.

After that, the Events Subcommittee ran Eco-Entertainment Night, leading sustainable Jeopardy, and Lawrenceville specific trivia games.

The final event of Sustainuary was Dinner in the Dark, which celebrated Valentine’s Day with a candle-lit dinner in Tsai and special desserts while shutting the lights off to conserve energy.

The Food & Farm subcommittee reintroduced Flexitarian Fridays with Sustainable Fare in Abbott in Tsai. They also added new signage to the Bathhouse to encourage sustainable purchasing choices (thank you Jasper & Micheal for your research!). In collaboration with the Big Red Farm Club, they also hosted two bonfires at the farm.

The Community Service Subcommittee hosted an exploration about confronting the climate crisis; they also ran an OTE about Climate Change Awareness with Every Child Valued.

The Outreach Subcommittee worked to produce the Winter Publication of the VILLEage Green.

The Facilities Subcommittee is working to get Lawrenceville accredited by GreenSchools and to build a green roof on campus.

As SusRep, I also started the new reusable cup house points initiative to incentivise students to bring their own reusable water bottles or coffee mugs to Starbucks, Bathhouse, and Gingered Peach instead of buying a single-use plastic one. We saw participation from both Circle and Crescent houses, suggesting that sustainable habits are being integrated across campus.

Moving into the Spring Term, SusCo has begun planning Earth Month festivities!

Stay Sus!

Sincerely,

Louise Carroll
