With the Fall Term, and 2025 coming to a close, Lawrenceville’s Sustainability Council has accomplished plenty!
To start off the year, as SusRep, I created a Sustainability Guide that was shared with Heads of House, House SusReps & SusTeams. It includes a ‘sus-ranking’ of popular feed vendors/take-out orders and recipe recommendations. At Smeeting, each week a new house is highlighted for their sustainable feed. Over the past three months, the majority of weekly house feeds are now homemade, rather than take-out!! In addition, several houses switched over to reusable utensils, rather than single-use!
In October, SusCo had its first event of the year, the Harvest Festival. The Events Subcommittee put together a great afternoon of pumpkin-carving and bird feeder painting; the Food & Farm Subcommittee baked fresh apple pies, which used Big Red Farm (BRF) apples!
The Community Service Subcommittee ran two OTEs: weeding a community garden and leading a nature walk with ECV. They also managed and oversaw the Slackwood Elementary LCAP, teaching students about sustainability.
Now, as we transition into the Winter Term, SusCo prepares for Sustainuary! Plenty of fun in store from the Events Subcommittee! The Outreach Subcommittee will work on their Winter Publication, collaborating with The Lawrence to shed light on sustainable programming throughout January and February. The Facilities Subcommittee will continue their work to get Lawrenceville accredited by GreenSchools, as well as making Sustainability Seminar projects a reality. The Food & Farm Subcommittee will work to add signage to BRF-grown foods in Tsai and Abbott. The House Subcommittee will help more houses transition to reusable utensils. Finally, the Community Service Subcommittee will prepare explorations and another OTE.
I would like to thank Dr. Laubach, the Leadership Team, and our entire extended group of council members for their time, energy, and dedication! We have truly accomplished a lot in such a short time and I’m so proud, and excited, to see what we can achieve in the Winter!
Stay Sus!
