Earth Day Flea Market

On Saturday, April 27th, the Sustainability Council hosted Lawrenceville’s very first Earth Day Flea Market. Students thrifted on gently-used clothes, enjoyed desserts and drinks, and played volleyball. In an interview with council member Anthony Sapp, who organized the event with Sophia Kohmann and Sarah Rodrigues, he explained that this flea market promoted thrift culture and sustainability at Lawrenceville in a trendy fashion.

Recently, thrift culture popularity has grown exponentially, helping people get rid of old clothes while allowing others to enjoy “hidden gems” of clothing. Thrifting ends the cycle of buying brand new clothes and throwing them out a few months later, reducing a lot of waste and our carbon footprints.

This event had a strong turnout and was one of the most successful sustainability-related events in years. We collected over 500 articles of clothing, of which a significant portion was sold to students. As a bonus, we raised over $1500 for the Watershed Institute, a non-profit that helps keep waters clean around Central New Jersey. 80% of total profits went to the Watershed Institute, and 20% of profits went back to the houses, which incentivized house participation.

Many clubs and organizations collaborated with the Sustainability Council at the fair.  The Climate Action Club, for example, sold cookies and muffins. Rocky’s Boutique, a fundraiser run by McClellan Community Service Representative Sarah Rodrigues, also sold clothes at the fair.

Students loved the event, saying that it brought the community together and was a creative way to be sustainable. Some also commented on how it was organized well, with music playing and activities set up, providing more incentive for people to show up.

Plans are already underway to expand the event next year, promising more food, clothes and tents. One attendee also proposed incorporating house points to further encourage clothing donations. More suggestions brought up by Sapp and other council members include dressing rooms to try on clothes and more clothing options for guys.

Overall, the event was a huge success, and we all look forward to it next year!
