With the conclusion of the Fall Term, The Lawrenceville Sustainability Council celebrates a productive start to the year and a solid foundation for new initiatives in the coming months. The council continues to provide opportunities for environmental awareness to the community, both through educational programming and substantial action. Some Fall highlights include:
- The Community Service Subcommittee started a new LCAP where members, in conjunction with the Watershed Institute, teach programming on environmental science to students at Slackwood Elementary School.
- After a successful Parents Weekend fundraiser for Eyes of the Wild, the Events Subcommittee hosted the organization to show the value of wildlife protection and biodiversity.
- In order to provide more opportunities for direct action on-campus, the new Facilities Subcommittee is working on a certification for Lawrenceville with The National Wildlife Foundation’s EcoSchools Program
- The Food Subcommittee remains dedicated to bringing nutritious and environmentally friendly options through home-made and locally-sourced granola and a new smoothie bar, as well as planned opportunities to increase student feedback.
- Updated recycling signage and feed guidelines mark the House Subcommittee’s commitment to establishing a constant presence in all houses in collaboration with house sustainability representatives.
- The Outreach Committee composed the first issue of the VILLEage Green Newsletter, the school’s only publication dedicated to sustainability on campus and globally.
Looking forward, the Sustainability Council gears up to host Sustainuary, a 1-month period during January and February dedicated to promoting environmental consciousness.
As always, tremendous thanks to Dr. Laubach, the leadership team, and all 70+ members of the sustainability council for making these achievements possible.
